Overcoming Artists Block

Confronting the Blank Miniature
Just as writers encounter the daunting expanse of a blank page, miniature painters often face the intimidating presence of an unpainted model. Its called artists block. You sit down, brush in hand, ready to create, but instead you feel stuck. That blank miniature stares back, challenging your confidence and creativity. Akin to writer’s block, this can leave even the most seasoned painters feeling creatively paralysed. It’s frustrating, and it can make you doubt your skills or capacity for inspiration. But take heart – this is a common experience, not a reflection of your ability. As Yoda wisely said, “Do or do not. There is no try.” Understanding why this happens and equipping yourself with practical strategies can help you push through the uncertainty and bring your miniatures to life, one brushstroke at a time.
Understanding Artists Block
Artists block can stem from various sources, including perfectionism, fear of failure, lack of inspiration, or burnout. Recognising the root cause is the first step toward addressing the issue effectively. So what can you do?
Practical Strategies
- Set Achievable Goals: Breaking down the painting process into manageable tasks can reduce feelings of overwhelm. Focusing on short duration projects (so not whole armies)can reignite motivation and provide a sense of accomplishment. As Vincent van Gogh put it, “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” Every miniature starts with a single step and before you know it, you’ve brought a character to life.
- Experiment with New Techniques: Venturing into unfamiliar territory can rejuvenate creativity. This could be techniques such as dry brushing or glazing; materials or even subject matter. New territory offers fresh perspectives and challenges to spark fresh ideas. You’ll find your thing but we found terrain to be a nice break from the norm, and a great opportunity to break free from trying to be perfect.
- Engage in Creative Play: Never too old 🙂 Allowing oneself to experiment without the pressure of perfection can lead to unexpected inspiration. Using unconventional tools or materials encourages a free-form approach, fostering creativity. And remember, “It’s not a bug. It’s a feature.” Mistakes can become opportunities for unique effects or weathering details.
- Participate in Community Challenges: Engaging with a painting community through challenges or prompts can provide direction and motivation. Platforms like Reddit’s r/ArtistLounge offer support and ideas.
- Visualisation & Planning: Take some time to visualise the finished miniature. Gathering reference images and defining a colour palette can provide a roadmap for miniature painting.
This is an approach that aims to eliminates hesitation when starting. As Albert Einstein said, “Creativity is intelligence having fun.” Having a clear plan while still allowing room for spontaneity can unlock your best work. - Pick an Uplifting Primer: The primer you choose can shape your painting experience and not just technically. A sea of grey primer can feel uninspiring, especially if your models started out as grey plastic. Try using a coloured primer that suits your vision and speeds things up. It might feel easier to get started, plus there’s the added excitement of trying something new.
Conclusion
I’ll let you into a secret – we have it! So what are we going to do? We will be printing new things this weekend, drawing inspiration from a well loved Pinterest board and venturing into rust. Encountering artists block is a common experience among miniature painters, but it doesn’t have to be a permanent roadblock. Just as every great miniature begins with a single stroke or squirt of paint, breaking through creative stagnation is about taking that first step. As Qui-Gon Jinn reminds us, “Your focus determines your reality.” You can shift from feeling stuck to rediscovering the joy and excitement that brought you to miniature painting in the first place. So next time that blank miniature stares back at you, remind yourself that every masterpiece starts somewhere – sometimes all it takes is a bit of inspiration and the courage to begin.
If you you feel rusty, let us know how you get on.
Happy painting 🙂
